Small Mindz Tutoring

ABOUT US

After seven years of classroom teaching, both in elementary and middle school, private tutoring, developing lesson plans, diving deep into my current role as ESOL Coordinator and leading discussions among students, faculty and staff we founded Small Mindz Tutoring. We realized that there was room for a group of like minded educators in South Florida that are truly dedicated to the art of teaching, instead of the companies that try to fit students into a cookie-cutter or simply fill their rosters with people who sound impressive but don’t actually know how to teach.

CULTURE & PHILOSOPHY

What are the principles behind Small Mindz Tutoring’s art of teaching?

Check them out below:

“With Students a little goes a long way”

Overwhelming students with information doesn’t get them anywhere. A new runner doesn’t start with running a marathon. The runner slowly trains their way up to running long distances as they become accustomed and build their endurance to run long distances. So it is in life, so it should be in education.

“Students avoid what they do not understand”

It is not because our students are lazy. Assisting students understand their work is the best answer to motivational issues. Doing work well feels GREAT! We all know everyone wants to feel good, especially your students.

“When teachers teach well, students love it”

If our students aren’t enjoying the help, then we are doing something wrong. We’ll figure it out and we’ll change it. Good teaching is a dialogue process. It involves actively listening as much as actively talking. We take the time to learn from our students about their difficulties as this is the key to reaching them where they are and ultimately teaching them well.

“Model Dedication”

As educators we understand, for some it comes easily; for others, it takes time. If students have not yet reached their goals, it is our job as educators to figure out how to get them there. We are dedicated to our students, always showing up, always seeking new ways to explain material, always doing the extra work that it takes to unlock their interests – that is the most effective way to inspire them.

“Growth is a mindset”

It’s crucial to remember that setbacks in academic situations are insightful and actually incredible moments to grow and learn. While the disappointment of not achieving everything you might have hoped for on a test or paper can be difficult to overcome, we are here to help remind all of our students that every setback is a growth spurt in disguise. If we were born knowing everything, all the wonder of learning would be gone. We believe that learning is a journey…

“Success is easy…Struggle is hard”

Building the right mindsets among our students is essential. The beginning of that mindset is teaching students the practices and habits that make up the baseline of academic success – organization, dedication and follow through. With these skills modeled and practiced, students learn that being successful academically is EASIER than struggling, and allows for far more free time!

“Being Bored is not an option”

It is up to us…the teacher to discover what is truly interesting to our students and to build material around this interest whenever possible. Searching for material that authentically engages students is the key to turning students on to learning the skills required in school and in life.
